Ivan Dolac

Ivan Dolac, a village on the south side of Hvar Island, is a perfect place for recovering from the stresses of a hectic life. It’s a place where the family can relax and enjoy the sun and the sea. The warmth with which locals welcome their guests will ensure that you have an unforgettably pleasurable holiday.

There is a Croatian saying which states that ‘the more you go south the sadder it is’. As soon as you emerge from the Pitve-Zavala tunnel which takes you to the south side of the island, you will see that this expression is far from true. Here the saying is ‘the further south, the sunnier’. For early risers, the exceptionally beautiful sunrise will provide a wonderful backdrop to your first coffee of the morning.

Charming clean beaches for children and grown-ups will be their domain each day. Your days and evenings will pass especially pleasantly with family gatherings around meals provided by local hosts, with the essential accompaniment of fine wine from the island’s southern slopes for the adults.

Lokva

The place called ‘Lokva’, meaning ‘pool’ or ‘pond’, at the entrance to the village of Ivan Dolac, was created as a water source for the livestock of local shepherds and farmers from the nearby settlement of Taja. Modern-day Ivan Dolac, which lies to the west of where the settlement of Taja used to be, came into being when the older village came under the ownership of the Kačić family.

Small-scale farmers

Small-scale farmers whose firms are designated ‘OPG’ are close at hand in the village to offer their products for tastings and sales, including seasonal vegetables, wine and olive oil. The ample sunshine produces a special sweetness in the fruits and vegetables grown in this region.

Winemakers

It is because of the exceptionally sunny climate that wines from these southern hillsides often win top prizes in international competitions. Check the label on the bottle, and make sure you choose wine made from the ‘Plavac’ grape variety, produced in the vineyards of Ivan Dolac and Zavala.
